About Andrea

Andrea Fernández Aponte graduated from Georgetown University in 2015 with a B.A. in Political Economy with a focus on Latin American political and economic history. During her undergraduate career, she worked as a research assistant, studied abroad at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and interned with the U.S. Department of State in the Economics section of the U.S. Embassy of Rome.

After graduating, Andrea went on to work at the Latin America Working Group (LAWG), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that advocates for fair and sustainable U.S. policies towards Latin America and the Caribbean. As a Program and Financial Associate, she researched and wrote blog posts, policy memos, and contributed to country-specific reports. She also managed LAWG’s finances and communication strategy, spearheaded the organization’s website restructuring and redesign, and served as translator and interpreter.

Andrea first became interested in Sino-Latin American relations while researching her senior thesis, in which she compared the behavior of Chinese mining companies operating in Peru and Zambia. Since then, she has been closely following new developments in both Sino-U.S. and Sino-Latin American relations. Her current research focuses on the role of Chinese investment in the promotion of sustainable development in Latin America.

Andrea is fluent in Spanish, familiar with Portuguese and Italian, and currently learning Mandarin. She is a modern and contemporary art enthusiast, an avid kung fu practitioner, and always eager to go Latin dancing.
