On April 3, 2019, Tsinghua-SAIS fellows had the privilege of attending an inspiring lecture by Dr. Chen Datong, founder of OmniVision, SpreadTrum, and Chairman of the Investment Committee at Hua Capital. Dr. Chen reflected on his entrepreneurial experiences and laid out his outlook for Sino-US tech collaboration.
Dr. Chen served as an “educated youth” in the countryside during the 1970s before embarking on overseas higher education and starting his own entrepreneurial endeavors. From OmniVision to SpreadTrum, WestSummit Capital and Hua Capital, Dr. Chen outlined a number of challenges and setbacks encountered in the entrepreneurial process and summarized his secrets to tech success. Referring to his involvement in SpreadTrum, Dr. Chen emphasized that the dominant player in the market makes the rules of the game. It is only through independent innovation that a company can thrive and sustain.
Dr. Chen noted that today, for the first time since the industrial revolution, new markets have emerged to compete with Europe and North American. China’s economic transformation has both caused chaos in the global market and given birth to new opportunities. The Chinese market has evolved into a global-scale experiment, breeding innovation across multiple sectors. Not least, the global tech sector.
