On March 20, Tsinghua-SAIS fellows were lucky to sit down with longtime diplomat and former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center.

Having just left the State Department, Ms. Thornton spoke with a breadth of experience and candor regarding the current state of play between China and the US. Tsinghua-SAIS students asked her questions on topics as wide-ranging as the importance of soft power, China’s growing military, and the nexus of China-Russia-US relations. Ms. Thornton spoke soberly and rationally across many subjects.

We sincerely thank the secretary for presenting us an honest, professional, and unbiased view on Sino-American politics.
